Two more points would have been lost for Barcelona as they tried to catch leaders Real Madrid and Girona, but a stoppage-time penalty kept them in the race.
At the break, Xavi’s team was behind because they had played another terrible first half. Ferran Torres tied the game, and in the 92nd minute, Gundogan scored after Daley Sinkgraven foolishly pushed him. The German player grabbed the ball and calmly put it past Alvaro Valles.
In the first 45 minutes, Barcelona played terribly and didn’t even get a shot on goal.
Las Palmas got seven, and Munir El Haddadi scored one of them to put the home team ahead.
Because it wasn’t already bad for Barcelona that a former player scored the goal, another former player set it up.
Munir scored after Sandro Ramirez crossed from the right side. Fans of his old team quickly put their hands together to say sorry, and then he slid into the corner with a big smile on his face.
Joao Cancelo was gone from Barcelona after only nine minutes. He went after the same ball as Maximo Perrone and hurt himself. Andreas Christensen came on to replace him.
Xavi promised that Barcelona would not have another bad first half like the one they had in their last game before the break, so he left Joao Felix on the bench. But Barcelona’s start to the game didn’t get much better without the Portuguese player.
Vitor Roque, who is 18 years old, was on the bench with Felix for Barcelona. He watched as Xavi’s team had a hard time making any progress in the first half. It was closer for Las Palmas to get a second goal than it was for Barcelona to tie the game. Sandro hit the post.
At least there was a response in the second half when Ferran scored 11 minutes in to tie the game. Sergio Roberto set him up in a crowded penalty area, and he hit the goal with a well-placed shot. It was Barça’s first shot that hit the goal, and Valles saved it.
Barcelona hadn’t lost their first game of the year since 2015, when Real Sociedad, coached by David Moyes, beat them 1-0. A goal by Ferran made everyone feel better.
Both Sandro and Munir, who used to play forward for Barcelona, were not playing because Las Palmas coach Francisco Garcia Pimienta wanted to rest his tired team. The Las Palmas coach is also a former Barcelona player. He worked there for 19 years, teaching the youth team, and was even considered for the top job when Quique Setien was fired in 2020.
Twenty minutes left, Felix was brought on, and the man he took off was a surprise. Robert Lewandowski was the one who made one. He was unbeatable for so long that it showed how Xavi was starting to think that if he had to sink or swim in the next few weeks, he’d do it his way. Ferran moved to center forward, and Felix and the other change, Lamine Yamal, went to either side of him.
Then Mika Marmol almost scored against Barcelona to become the second former player to do so. The player who used to play defense for Barcelona B headed a corner just wide, which let Roque make his start. With his first touch, he almost scored when he picked off a short back pass, but Valles blocked it.
Only Real Madrid had scored two goals against Las Palmas this season, so it looked like they would hold on. Julian Araujo, the team’s normal right back, is on loan to Barcelona and couldn’t play against them, so Sinkgraven filled in.
Gundogan had the chance to make it three points after his stupid push, and he took it. Late in the game, Roque had a chance to score his first goal, but his shot went wide. Barcelona had kept the lead at the top at seven points, so it didn’t matter. As the second part of the season starts, they are still in the running for the title. They might still be able to defend their title if they learn how to start games better.
