Volunteering in animal rescue might be difficult at times, but there are also moments of pure delight that would not be possible without their relentless efforts.
Joey Wagner is a marine biologist from Nova Scotia, Canada, who volunteers at the Baie Ste Marie Animal Society. Joey got a call in 2013 about a terribly beaten and neglected pit bull mix puppy who really needed some TLC. When Joey showed up, he saw the pup was on its way to death.
Joey and the rescue team took the puppy, whose they called Mojo, to Parade Street Vet, PEI Small Animal Hospital for treatment of severe dehydration and demodectic mange. He’d lost all of his fur and was covered in mite bites by the time he was three months old. Malnutrition and poor living circumstances exacerbated his mange, and the pup whimpered in agony while Joey observed his treatment.
“When Mojo was surrendered, it was a very fast process and a very emotional time,” Joey posted on Facebook. “We had many requests to adopt him, but it was not considered because of his severe health.”
As Mojo tried to survive, Joey and his wife Leta fell in love with him. Despite the way he had been mistreated, Mojo was kind to others and showed a great capacity for forgiveness. He became a light of hope for many who heard about his struggles.
“Mojo’s will to live was enormous!” Joey reflects.
Joey was first in line to fill out adoption paperwork when he was finally able to find his ultimate home. Because Joey had been with Mojo every step of the way, the shelter naturally authorized the adoption. Still, no one could have expected the puppy’s delighted response to seeing his savior again on the day Joey showed up to bring Mojo home!
Mojo’s small tail began to wag fiercely the moment he noticed Joey. He couldn’t get near enough to his new father, writhing his whole body and smothering Joey’s face in kisses. Joey couldn’t stop smiling as Mojo showed him how grateful he was for a fresh lease on life.
“He definitely remembers you,” the vet said as Joey crawled into his arms for additional hugs and kisses. We’ve never seen a happier puppy!
Joey and Mojo’s joyous reunion with the world has now been broadcast for over seven years. Mojo is now a happy and well-cared-for member of Joey and Leta’s group. His fur never came back completely, but he doesn’t seem to mind. The Wagners have also continued to utilize his tale as a way to raise funds and awareness for animal rescue organizations.
Seeing how Mojo reacted shows how much animals comprehend. Joey had helped Mojo when he was at his lowest. Their link is unbreakable.
